How to properly prepare your yard for winter

13 octobre 2020 | By Ameublements Tanguay

You enjoyed your yard all summer long. And it gave you nothing but good times: family barbecues, picking vegetables in the garden with the kids, evenings under the gazebo with your significant other.

But now, with the green gardens once again preparing to give way to frosty ones, it's time to say goodbye... until next spring. Sad, isn't it?

In this article, our team gives you some tips on how to prepare your yard for winter.

Garden furniture

Outdoor furniture is of high quality today. Despite its robustness, it is recommended to store garden furniture as soon as cooler temperatures set in.

It is best to store furniture away from the elements: in a shed or garage, for example. Otherwise, it is perfectly possible to leave garden furniture outside, under a tarpaulin or protective cover, or even under a gazebo, with a little preparation.

Preparing furniture for winter

First, remove the covers from your cushions and dry clean them, then dry them flat before storing them away from moisture, ideally in a vacuum bag.

Next, wash your outdoor furniture.

Scrub your rattan and wooden furniture with a brush to remove any residue and dirt that has accumulated over the summer. If possible, apply a coat of sealant to wooden furniture to prevent damage from moisture during the winter. Clean your plastic furniture with a cloth and soapy water.

Once the furniture is clean and dry, gather the tables, chairs, and other items under a tarp or protective cover. It is very important to raise outdoor furniture off the ground to prevent direct contact with the ground, as moisture could damage it during storage. Be sure to place a pallet or pieces of wood underneath them.

Anything made of glass or ceramic should preferably be brought indoors during the winter. As for the gazebo, it can be covered with a winter shelter during the cold season.

BBQ

Some people choose to use their BBQ all year round, while others prefer to store it away, sometimes due to lack of space or accessibility.

If you want to store your BBQ for the winter, here are a few tips:

  1. Remove the burners, diffusers, and grates, then clean them with a degreaser to remove grease, oil, and residue.
  2. Coat the tank with a degreaser, leave it to work for a few minutes, then scrub it to remove the grease. Rinse thoroughly.

Once this is done, reassemble the BBQ and turn it on at maximum power for about 15 minutes. This final step removes any remaining residue.

Where and how should you store the BBQ after cleaning it? You have two options:

  1. Inside (garage, shed, storage room, etc.): store the BBQ under the cover WITHOUT the propane tank.
  2. Outdoors: Raise the BBQ if it is on the grass, then store the appliance under the cover with or without the propane tank.

A word about propane tanks: always store tanks outdoors with the valve closed. Keep tanks upright at all times.

Potted plants and planters

When preparing your yard for winter, you should also think about your outdoor plants.

Some plants will withstand winter well without any preparation: shrubs and conifers, for example. Mediterranean plants, on the other hand, hate the cold and will need to spend the winter indoors at a temperature between 5 and 10°C.

“What about my potted plants and planters?” you ask.

Potted plants are more sensitive to frost because most of the surface of the pot is in constant contact with the (very) cold winter air. They should therefore ideally be brought indoors, especially since not all types of pots are resistant to the cold.

For example, terracotta pots are permeable to water and may crack. Plastic pots, if they are of poor quality, could also be damaged by the expansion of the soil they contain. Metal pots are very durable, but may rust over time. Fiberglass pots, which are relatively new to the market, are more expensive, but will withstand even the harshest cold without any problems.

Do your pots clash with your interior décor? Place them in planters to enhance the overall look.

Preparing your yard for winter... and for the arrival of spring

Preparing your yard for winter isn't very complicated. The important thing is to start the work before the first cold spells arrive and to take it step by step.
