The Sonos Five is designed for music lovers looking for expansive, detailed and powerful sound from a single speaker. Its acoustic architecture combines six Class-D digital amplifiers, three tweeters and three midwoofers to deliver precise vocals, crisp highs and deep bass with excellent stereo separation.
Connected over Wi-Fi, it lets you stream high-resolution lossless audio from compatible services, the Sonos app or Apple AirPlay 2. Its 3.5 mm analog input also lets you connect a turntable, CD player, computer or other audio source and distribute that content to other rooms equipped with Sonos products.
The six Class-D digital amplifiers are precisely tuned to the Five’s drivers and acoustic architecture. Each component of the system is individually controlled to deliver powerful sound while maintaining precision and balance at different listening levels.
The system features three tweeters. The centre tweeter is optimized for vocal reproduction, while the two side-firing tweeters expand the soundstage for a more immersive listening experience.
Three midwoofers handle midrange frequencies while maximizing bass reproduction. The sealed acoustic enclosure helps control airflow and minimize reverberation, echo and unwanted distortion.
When placed horizontally, the Sonos Five automatically detects its orientation and separates the left and right channels to create a wide stereo soundstage from a single speaker.
When positioned vertically, its digital processing switches to mono. This orientation is particularly convenient in narrower spaces or when using two Five speakers to create a dedicated stereo pair.
Two identical Sonos Five speakers can be paired in the Sonos app to create a dedicated stereo pair. Each speaker then handles its own left or right channel, providing more precise instrument separation, a wider soundstage and a better-defined central listening position.
Trueplay™ technology analyzes the reflections and acoustic characteristics of your room to precisely adjust the speaker’s sound to its surroundings. Calibration uses the microphones on a compatible iOS device to measure the room and automatically optimize the Five’s equalization.
Bass, treble and Loudness can also be adjusted manually in the Sonos app.
The Five uses Wi-Fi to provide stable streaming throughout the home and supports high-resolution lossless audio from compatible services. Unlike a conventional Bluetooth connection, your phone does not need to remain close to the speaker, and incoming calls will not interrupt playback.
The Five does not feature built-in Bluetooth audio streaming. Wireless playback is primarily handled through Wi-Fi, Apple AirPlay 2 and Sonos-compatible services.
Apple AirPlay 2 lets you stream audio directly from a compatible iPhone, iPad or Mac. The Five can also be integrated into an AirPlay multi-room setup with other compatible devices.
The 3.5 mm analog audio input lets you connect a turntable, CD player, computer or other external audio source. Once connected to the Five, content from that source can be sent to other rooms in your Sonos system.
An auxiliary cable is sold separately. Some turntables may also require an external phono preamp if one is not built in.
The Five can operate on its own or be grouped with other Sonos products to play the same content in multiple rooms or different content in each room. Groups, volume and sources can be managed directly in the Sonos app.
Two Five speakers can also be used as compatible rear speakers in select Sonos home theatre configurations. When the Five speakers are configured as surrounds, their analog inputs are disabled.
Built-in touch controls provide quick access to music controls without using your phone. They automatically adapt to the physical orientation of the speaker.
The Sonos Five can connect to compatible Wi-Fi networks on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. For installations where a wired connection is preferred, a 10/100 Ethernet port is also integrated into the rear of the speaker.
The humidity-resistant design allows the Five to be used in certain humid indoor spaces, such as a bathroom. However, it is not waterproof and should not be exposed directly to water or left outdoors.
